Ce prospectus promotionnel a été publié à l'occasion de la sortie au cinéma en 1978 du film d'animation de Ralph Bakshi. Tom Jung, artiste et illustrateur américain célèbre pour ses affiches de films, a notamment réalisé des affiches iconiques pour Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980) et Apocalypse Now (1979), ainsi que pour The Lord of the Rings (1978) de Ralph Bakshi, dont cette image fait partie de la campagne promotionnelle officielle.
The Lord of the Rings, film d’animation réalisé par Ralph Bakshi et sorti en 1978, constitue la première adaptation cinématographique ambitieuse de l’œuvre de J. R. R. Tolkien. Production américano-britannique distribuée par United Artists, elle couvre librement les événements des deux premiers volumes (The Fellowship of the Ring et The Two Towers), interrompant le récit après la bataille de Helm’s Deep. Réalisé avec un mélange d’animation traditionnelle et de rotoscopie – procédé consistant à retracer image par image des prises de vue réelles – le film se distingue par son esthétique sombre, ses décors stylisés et ses effets visuels parfois psychédéliques. Les concepts et storyboards des personnages et scènes majeures sont dus à Mike Ploog, illustrateur de renom, tandis que les arrière-plans et décors portent la marque du britannique Ian Miller. Un jeune Tim Burton, encore inconnu, participa au tracé de celluloïds rotoscopiques. In The Lord of the Rings (1978) by Ralph Bakshi, the visual style emerged from a collective effort overseen by Bakshi himself, who aimed for a realistic animation blending rotoscoping and illustration. The concepts and storyboards for the main characters and key scenes were created by renowned illustrator Mike Ploog, while the backgrounds and settings were crafted by British artist Ian Miller. A young and then-unknown Tim Burton contributed by tracing rotoscoped cels. Together with the work of many other animators and artists, these contributions gave the film its dark, distinctive style, now considered a cult classic.
Inutile de présenter en français le Seigneur des Anneaux, livre au gigantesque retentissement universel et dont l'adaptation cinématographique n'a fait qu'amplifier une renommée déjà acquise. Les trois volets de ce roman-monde fantasy : La communauré de l'anneau. Les deux tours et Le retour du roi, ont été traduits pour la première fois en français par Francis Ledoux pour l'éditeur Christian Bourgois en 1972.
